SUCCESS STORY: Dr. Yap Heck Wei, PhD (Finance), Class of 2016 Completing my PhD in Finance was a transformative journey that sharpened my analytical thinking and deepened my understanding of risk. It laid the foundation for a career built on technical excellence, strategic insight, and a commitment to sound governance. Today, I lead Model Risk Management and Validation at Maybank Group, overseeing model assurance across Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. My early grounding in wholesale credit approval and independent credit risk review at global banks shaped my approach to risk governance. The PhD experience equipped me with the discipline and technical depth to challenge assumptions, drive innovation, and lead with clarity. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of leading transformation initiatives that embedded value creation into credit risk review, strengthened model governance, and aligned practices with evolving regulatory expectations—from Basel II/III to IFRS 9 and emerging AI/ML risks. I’ve worked closely with regulators across ASEAN, providing independent assurance and forward-looking insights that build trust and resilience. What I value most is the ability to connect strategy with execution—ensuring our models not only meet technical standards but also support responsible growth. I’m proud to have championed a culture of explainability, fairness, and robustness in model governance, especially as we navigate the frontier of AI in banking.
