Dr. Hazik Mohamed

Hazik is a business strategist with substantial market research, operational management, and start-up experience. With over 20 years of working experience, he spent his first 10 years in the engineering field where he led several successful projects and received “Above and Beyond” recognitions for his contributions to projects and critical issues that won market share for the company. The subsequent 10 years were spent on building start-ups and business consulting, where he consulted for MSMEs and MNCs on various business-related issues including market penetration, operational process optimisation, capital management, strategic analysis, and implementation.

His PhD research specialised in behavioural economics and decision-making analysis, applicable in many industry applications including marketing and consumer (or user) behaviour as well as policy formulation and regulatory implementation. He also has a strong interest in strategic planning as well as the applicability of innovative, disruptive, and scalable technologies.

He has spoken extensively on blockchain-based applications in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Lahore (Pakistan), Lyon (France), and Singapore, on multi-dimensional approach to poverty alleviation and sustainability in Jakarta, on the development of a Shariah-based socio-development index and financial inclusion in Islamabad (Pakistan), as well as on early warning indicators in macro-prudential policy in Manama (Bahrain) that recommend solutions to pro-cyclical economic behaviours. His past corporate clients include: UNCDF, for consultation on their Regional Innovation Center; ASEAN Secretariat, where he was commissioned to deliver a Handbook on Access to Alternative Finance for MSMEs; Oman Tourism (Sultanate of Oman), for whom he executed regional PR & marketing campaigns; SME Bank (Malaysia), for specific strategic advisory; and EDC@SMCCI (Enterprise Development Centre of Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce for MSMEs) for whom he served as an independent consultant.

Hazik also mentored CodeAr.my’s Project Brainchild pre-accelerator program for Khazanah and its subsidiaries in Kuala Lumpur as a subject matter expert. He is an advisor to several start-ups and is Shariah advisor to FSAC under Pergas Investment Holdings (PIH) on key areas of economics, finance, Shariah and technology, including the blockchain. He is the published author of Belief and Rule Compliance (Elsevier) on behavioural economics, and Blockchain, Fintech, and Islamic Finance (De Gruyter). Professionally, he currently spends about 70% of his working hours on blockchain-based innovations, while the rest are spent on business growth strategies for start-ups and Islamic Finance Shari’ah advisories.
