INTRODUCTION
The goal of PhD in applied research is to train candidates to acquire skills in problem identification, diagnosing them efficiently and making critical decision for the benefit of the organisation. They are to be trained as efficient managerial decision makers through handling and solving actual problems faced in five different managerial functional areas (case approach) as in Management, Finance, Operations, Marketing and Strategy. They are meant for at least middle level managers with 10 years of working experience. Each case is to be completed in one semester (5-6 months) and to be done in series
This is in contrast to the philosophical research which are geared towards contributing to new knowledge.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for the PhD Applied Research programme, applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:
- A Master’s degree [Level 7, Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF)] in business or a related field with a CGPA of at least 3.00 as accepted by the PBS Senate; or
- Other qualifications that is recognised as equivalent to a Master’s degree as approved by PBS Senate.
All international candidates from countries where English is not a medium of instruction must have obtained a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 550 or 80 for the Internet-Based Test or Band 6.0 for International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or its equivalent.
DELIVERY OF PROGRAMME
- Study duration: 6 semesters
- Students are required to identify 5 functional issues in their current employment as case research in the areas of Management, Finance, Marketing, Operations and Strategy
- Students will explore the issues in sequence and complete one (1) case research per semester. Students must pass the case research to their supervisors in order to advance to the next semester
- In order to gain an understanding of the areas, they will read and present three (3) books per weekend (9 books per semester) to their respective supervisors
- Colloquiums with the supervisors are held three (3) times per semester
- In the final semester, students will finalise and collate all case research into a Thesis. Students will orally defend his/her thesis in a Final viva voce to a panel which includes the Top Management of their employer and an external examiner
