Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme

INTRODUCTION

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme is designed to prepare students for a career as an academic or a researcher in the public or private sector. The research in the PhD programme is an in-depth investigation of specific research issue(s) related to a management discipline with the aim of enhancing and contributing to new knowledge in that discipline. Students are expected to have strong theoretical and research methodological foundations and be able to conduct their research fairly independently.

The fields of study offered in the PhD programme are as follows:

• Management
(including: Marketing, International Business, Management Information System, Human Resource Management, Entrepreneurship, etc.)
• Finance
• Accounting
• Business Law

    DURATION, INTAKES AND CLASSES

    DURATION OF STUDY
    The period of study ranges from 6 semesters (3 years) to a maximum of 10 semesters (5 years).

    STUDENT INTAKES
    There are two intakes of students in each academic year: in September (first semester) and March (second semester).

    CLASSES
    Classes are held on weekdays (6.30 pm – 9.30 pm) during the evenings and on Saturday afternoons (2.30 pm – 5.30 pm).

      PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

      The Doctor of Philosophy programme encompasses the following four phases:

      PHASE I – COURSEWORK (12 credit hours)Two core courses (6 credit hours)
      – Research Methodology
      – Business StatisticsSeminar course (3 credit hours)
      – Seminar in Management/Marketing/Finance/AccountingTheory course (3 credit hours)
      – Theory in Management/Marketing/Finance/Accounting(Note: Students who specialise in Finance are also required to register for the Econometrics Method course).
      PHASE II – PROPOSAL DEFENCE Each student must publicly present and defend his/her PhD research proposals.
      The student is only allowed to continue with his/her research to Phase IV on passing of the defence of his/her proposal.
      PHASE III – THESIS PREPARATION The student proceeds to his/her data collection, data analysis and report writing.
      PHASE IV – VIVA VOCE After completion and submission of the thesis, the student is required to attend a Viva Voce to orally defend his/her thesis.
