Serdang, 6 February 2018 – Putra Business School (PBS) in collaboration with Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Putra Student Association (PSA) organized a public lecture with PBS’s Professor of Practice, YAB Dato’ Seri DiRaja Dr. Zambry bin Abdul Kadir on the topic “Social Business: Perak Experience”. YAB Dato’ Seri is also Perak’s Menteri Besar.
This special event was attended by the Vice Chancellor of UPM, YBhg. Professor Datin Paduka Dato’ Dr Aini Ideris, Perak State Secretary, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Abdul Puhat bin Mat Nayan, Founder of Sister Sabria Montreal, Sister Sabariah Hussein, PBS’s President & Chief Executive Officer, Professor Dr. Zulkornain Yusop and Dean of Faculty of Economics and Management, UPM, Professor Dr. Azali Mohamed, among others. The event was held at the Philip Kotler Hall, Faculty of Economics and Management, UPM from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm.
The objective of this sharing session was to expose students and faculty members on the topic of Social Business”. Social Business, as defined by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, is a business that is created and designed to address social problems in a financially sustainable way. As Ipoh had been declared the world’s fifth Social Business City (first in South East Asia and second in Asia) in 2015, YAB Dato’ Seri had shared his experience and journey in realizing such status.
On the same occasion, PBS had invited Sister Sabariah Hussein, also known as Sister Sabria, to share her experience in helping the community in Montreal, Canada. Sister Sabariah, a Malaysian who had migrated to Canada, has had 30 years of experience in volunteer work and she runs a women shelter called “Our Second Home” in her own house. She also cooks meals for mosques all over Montreal, and even works closely with two local churches to help cook for the needy in her neighbourhood, regardless of their religion, race, and gender. Her selfless act embodies what Human Governance is about and it was a true honour to have her speak at this event.
