Home-grown Doctor of Philosophy Programme

The fields of study offered in the home-grown Doctor of Philosophy programme are as follows:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Management)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Accounting)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Finance)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Hospitality)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Marketing)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Human Potential)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Governance)

To qualify for the Doctor of Philosophy programmes, applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.30 or its equivalent in a relevant field. However, an applicant with a CGPA below 3.30 or its equivalent in a relevant field may be considered if the applicant possesses the relevant working or research experiences, or
  • A professional qualification that is recognised as being equivalent to the above; or
  • Other qualifications approved by the PBS Senate.

In addition, all international applicants must meet the language proficiency requirements of the University.

  • All international candidates from countries where English is not a medium of instruction must have obtained a minimum TOEFL 550 or Band 6.0 for IELTS.

For local applicants, they must have obtained at least credit in English at Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) level or have passed English course conducted at the Diploma or Bachelor’s level.

PHASE I – COURSEWORK (6 credit hours)

The coursework is mandatory. The courses are prerequisites and each student must attain an overall CGPA of 3.00 before he/she is allowed to proceed with his/her research in Phase II.

  • Advanced Research Methodology
  • Business Statistics

PHASE II – PROPOSAL DEFENCE

Each student must publicly present and defend his/her PhD research proposal. The assessment at the PD stage involves evaluation of the student’s knowledge of the extant literature in his/her area of research, his ability to integrate the theories pertinent to the research in formulating the appropriate research framework and his/her ability to adopt the appropriate research design.

The student is only allowed to continue with his/her research to Phase III upon passing of the defence of his/her proposal.

PHASE III – THESIS PREPARATION

The student proceeds to continue with his/her data collection, data analysis and report writing.

PHASE IV – VIVA VOCE

After completion and submission of the thesis, the student is required to attend a viva-voce to orally defend his/her thesis.

The assessment at the viva voce stage involves evaluation of the student’s knowledge and ability to complete his/her research study to the satisfaction of the panel of two independent examiners.
